These portraits are of Emily Staples Hearin and William Jefferson Hearin, who are the major benefactors of this museum. “Miss Emily,” as she was affectionately called, was a true lover of Mobile and this crazy thing called Mardi Gras. You saw her in the video in the theater. She was very active in local civic projects and was a driving force in Mobile Historic Preservation and the Junior League of Mobile, among many other interests. Mostly, she was a student of Mardi Gras and wrote several books on her favorite subjects. She served as queen for the Mobile Carnival Association in 1934.
Mr. Hearin, likewise was heavily involved civically in the City of Mobile. He was the publisher of the Mobile Press Register, our local newspaper. He was also head of the Ralph B. Chandler Foundation, which is now the Hearin Chandler foundation. Like his wife, Mr. Hearin loved Mardi Gras.
